Notes The
Passaic Valley is a geographic region. It follows the
Passaic River which runs in a zig-zag. The river begins in
Mendham, in the southern part of Morris County. It flows
southeast, becoming part of the boundary with Somerset
County. It then turns to flow northeast for the eastern
boundary of Morris County and the western boundary of Union
County. It continues into Bergen County where it turns to
flow southeast. It empties into Newark Bay near
Newark. For this genealogy, the Passaic Valley region
usually refers to the upper part of this valley, above or south of
Chatham in Morris County. The upper valley is roughly all of
Union County (previously part of Essex
County) and nearby parts of
Morris
County and
Somerset County.
